Posted in News with tags , , on January 9, 2011 by simonmarshalljones

A reminder that Spectral subscriptions are still available for the first THREE chapbooks  – by Gary McMahon, Gary Fry and Cate Gardner  – £10UK/£12EU /$20 US/ $25US RoW per sub per year (inclusive of p+p). Individual chapbooks are available at £3.50UK/£4EU/$6.50US/$12RoW (all prices inclusive of P+P).  To order, please submit remittances through Paypal, please, account spectralpress[at]gmail[dot]com (and if you send it as a gift then there are no Paypal fees this end).

PLEASE NOTE!! When gifting the money, PLEASE write your address in thepersonal note section – I have discovered that the address doesn’t show up if you send money that way…

Advance warning: if you take out a subscription from issue TWO, the price is £13.50UK/£16EU/$30US/$40RoW. Why? There will be FOURissues in the subscription, plus it includes postage to your part of the world. Also, these are very high-quality productions, and even at this price it still represents extremely good value for money. Crisp, clear printing, understated, top notch artwork and some of the best writers working in the ghostly/supernatural horror field today. Taking the amateur small-press to a new level, in fact.

Susbcriptions are very limited – act today to get yours!!!

Spectral update and other stuff…

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , on December 2, 2010 by simonmarshalljones

Just a short little note to let people know that the PDF proof of the very first Spectral Press chapbook is in my possession, and has also been passed on to Gary McMahon for final approval. Many thanks to the sterling Neil Williams for putting it all together so rapidly and so well – there will be a few very minor cosmetic changes made in terms of layout, incidental text (NOT THE STORY, BTW – that’s bloody perfect) and stuff but in all honesty it’s all there, more or less. And I have to say it’s looking mighty good. If all goes according to plan it’ll be sent to the printer’s a week Friday and I should get everything done by the end of the month.

(Please note: anybody wanting a copy for review will receive a PDF file, rather than a physical hard-copy. I am attempting to keep the costs down as much as possible for at least the first year – if you want a hard-copy for your collection, then you’ll have to buy one, I’m afraid.)

Anyway, for all those out there who are, quite understandably, dithering about taking out a subscription, unsure whether they should send £10 of their hard-earned cash to an unknown quantity for a year’s worth of Spectral Press volumes, then let me assure you this is really happening. Come January, What They Hear in the Dark, the very first one, will be available to buy and those who have taken out subs already will have copies in their hands to lovingly gaze upon. You can do that too by taking out a sub and not only will you get three issues in the first year but your name will also be entered into a prize-draw, where you stand the chance of winning a great prize. (Details below)

Spectral subcriptions

Do you want your name listed as a founder subscriber in the first Spectral chapbook? If so, then act fast, before Monday 6th December 2010! A yearly subscription will cost £10UK/£12EU /$20US/ $25US RoW (all prices inclusive of postage and packing). Individual chapbooks will be available for £3.50UK/£4EU/$8US/$12RoW (again all prices inclusive of p+p). You can either pay via Paypal or cheque: Paypal is spectralpress[at]gmail[dot]com and for details of how to pay by cheque, please send an email to the same address and I’ll get back to you forthwith.

Spectral Prize-draw

As an added incentive, if you do choose to subscribe before the end of this year (31st December 2010 closing date), your name will be entered into the prize-draw, where you’ll stand the chance of winning a specially signed and framed edition of  Gary McMahon’s chapbook. Alongside it will be a copy of the annotated manuscript, ie  Gary has scrawled all over it in his best red biro – he’s even signed it and ‘illuminated’ it with a little doodle of a smiley horned devil on it as well. The winner will even get a free subscription extension for another year on top of that… now that’s what I call a bargain! (Winner will be notified by mid-January)

Books received

Yesterday saw the postman deliver two lovely book, courtesy of Solaris Books:

The Age of Odin, by James Lovegrove

Engineering Infinity, edited by Jonathan Strahan

I am also reading, for pleasure this time, Tim Lebbon’s novella The Thief of Broken Toys (ChiZine Publications). Apart from the fact that I like Tim’s work, I also thought the title so poetic and enigmatic that it was actually a no-brainer purchase. In just the first half of the opening chapter, the feeling of deep loss and estrangement is acutely described and felt, Tim using his trademark lean writing style with few words but every single one of them counting. Might give this one a write-up here very soon….

NEWS: And this is where it all starts….

Yes, this IS where it all begins…

What am I blabbering on about, you may very well ask? I’m talking about Spectral Press, or rather, the very first chapbook in the series, Gary McMahon’s What They Hear in the Dark, due out (officially) in January 2011. Today, I’ll be checking it, then I’ll put together some of the other pages (signature page layout, copyright notice page and also a page listing all the founder subscribers – if YOU want YOUR name on there, then act quickly to get a subscription now!! Details below), and then shoot it all off to GraphixMeister Neil Williams to assemble the whole thing. Once he’s woven his magic, down to the printer’s for actual production, with the added complication of getting the signature sheets printed first, then collected to send to Gary to scribble on, sent back and returned to printer’s for final collation – December is going to be one busy month….

As an added incentive, if you do choose to subscribe before the end of this year (31st December 2010 closing date), your name will be entered into the prize-draw, where you’ll stand the chance of winning a specially signed and framed edition of  Gary McMahon’s chapbook. The winner will even get a free subscription extension for another year on top of that… now that’s what I call a bargain! (Winner will be notified by mid-January)

Finally, to whet your appetite, here’s the back cover blurb for What They Hear in the Dark:

An absence is more terrifying than a presence…

Rob and Becky bought the old place after the death of their son, to repair and renovate – to patch things up and make the building habitable.

They both knew that they were trying to fix more than the house, but the cracks in their marriage could not be papered over.

Then they found the Quiet Room.”

So what are you waiting for then?

Spectral bits and pieces

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on November 14, 2010 by simonmarshalljones

Okay, just a few things to tell you before I get down to working on the main piece for today. First off, I am excited to be able to announce that the artist Daniele Serra has agreed to create the cover for Spectral III, Cate Gardner’s Nowhere Hall. His work has appeared in a whole panoply of places, including DC Comics, Image Comics, Weird Tales magazine and Cemetery Dance, and has adorned the covers of many books, including works by Allyson Bird, Brian Stableford and the recent anti-fascist anthology Never Again, published by Gray Friar Press. Cate’s surreal tale of a man haunted by other people’s ghosts would be better represented by Daniele’s beautifully and darkly eerie artwork than a photo – and I think you’ll agree too when you see his work. His website can be accessed here.

Don’t forget, yearly subscriptions are available for Spectral Press publications – you can pay through Paypal or you can now send me a cheque if you prefer. Each sub will cost £10UK/£12EU /$20US/ $25US RoW (all prices inclusive of postage and packing). Individual chapbooks will be available for £3.50UK/£4EU/$8US/$12RoW (again all prices inclusive of p+p). You can send remittances to spectralpress[at]gmail[dot]com – for details of how to pay by cheque, please send an email to the same address and I’ll get back to you forthwith.

As an incentive, if you do choose to subscribe before the first publication, then your name will be entered into the prize-draw, where you’ll stand the chance of winning a specially signed and framed edition of the first chapbook by Gary McMahon (What They Hear in the Dark).

I look forward to hearing from you!!

Spectral news…

Posted in News with tags , , , , on November 10, 2010 by simonmarshalljones

… and it’s very good, nay EXCELLENT, news indeed!

I have nearly raised enough capital to bring the publication of the first chapbook, Gary McMahon’s What They Hear in the Dark, forward. I am now looking at a prospective JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 launch date for Spectral Press.

SUBSCRIPTIONS

All of you are still greatly encouraged to take out a subscription to Spectral Press – this is one method by which you can be guaranteed to get everything that Spectral publishes. Plus, don’t forget the subscriber-only competition, for details, please see below.

Each subscription costs a mere £10UK/£12EU /$20US/ $25US RoW (all prices inclusive of postage and packing). Individual chapbooks will be available for £3.50UK/£4EU/$8US/$12RoW (again all prices inclusive of p+p). Please send remittances, via Paypal, to spectralpress[at]gmail[dot]com. You can also find out more details about Spectral by sending an email to the same address.

COMPETITION

When you do take out a one year sub, your name will be entered into the prize-draw, where you stand the chance of winning a specially signed and framed edition of the first chapbook by Gary McMahon. Alongside it will be a copy of the annotated manuscript, which means that Gary has scribbled all over it in red pen – and he’s even signed it and drawn a little doodle of a smiley horned creature on it as well (very cute, in the way that only Gary understands the word). And there’s another incentive – the winner will also get a free subscription extension for another year on top of that.

You can ONLY win this prize by taking out a subscription!!! So don’t hesitate!!

Spectral Press doings and news

Posted in News with tags , , , on November 5, 2010 by simonmarshalljones

Just a little note to those who took out subscriptions yesterday and also to those who are thinking of taking out a sub in the near future:

Please be aware that the FIRST chapbook is scheduled for April/May of 2011. I am fully cognisant of the fact that there’s quite a gap between now and then, but this is a deliberate ploy in order to give me enough time to raise the necessary funds so I can pull it all together. IF, however, I raise the money BEFORE end of March of next year then I will bring the publication date forward, simple as that. I just wanted all customers, both existing and potential, to be aware of this. The money is already coming in, but I am also completely aware that for most people I am an unknown quantity, and that they would be wary of sending me subscriptions, which I completely understand. I am also working on raising funds from other sources as well – be assured, that Spectral Press IS happening. However, by subscribing now you get to be a part of this new venture – and if anyone DOES take one out before the first publication is issued then your name will be listed in the very first chapbook itself – how’s that for an incentive? Regardless, I thank you for your patience!!

In other news…

The latest recruit for Willie Meikle’s The Unspoken charity anthology is…

Lisa Tuttle

Lisa is a very well-known fantasy, science-fiction and horror writer, having published scores of novels and collections over the years. The anthology is most definitely shaping up to be a very exciting one, one that I am getting increasingly proud of being a part of.

More news on this project as it comes in.
